My Top 5 Tips for Healthy Weight Loss

Weight loss is confusing, there's a lot of information out there. But here's the thing - I doesn't need to be, unless you have an underlying condition weight loss, healthy weight loss is totally doable by making small, manageable adjustments AND it can be incredibly enjoyable. Believe me it is NOT as difficult as it's made out to be.

WATER – aim to drink half your body weight in oz of water each day. Example here would be your weight is 150Ibs so you need to drink 75 oz of water every day that works out as 2.2 liters. Remember that this is a base amount, if you are exercising or in a hot climate you need to increase. An easy way to tell if you are drinking enough is by your urine, you want to aim for a light lemonade color, if it’s dark in color you need to drink more, if it’s clear you’re drinking too much.

Fiber – fibre is your friend and you really need it. You should be aiming to consume 30-50g of fibre per day. Fiber is vital for healthy bowel functioning, remember that if you are not ‘going’ at least once a day this will cause issues with your weight loss effort. A point worth making here is that if you go 3 days or more without a bowel movement you are constipated and may need to see your doctor. But increasing your fibre intake is a great place to start. Great sources of fibre are green leafy veggies and whole grains, you can add flax seeds or chia seeds to your smoothies or yogurts.

Sleep – 7-8 hours is necessary for optimal functioning, this isn’t only true of brain function and energy levels but if you have issues sleeping or are not sleeping enough chances are you’re making very poor dietary decisions and this will affect your ability to lose weight

Make your plate colorful – ensuring that you have as many colors on your plate as possible is a fantastic way to make sure you are getting all your micro nutrients (think vitamins and minerals). When the body is starved of vital nutrients such as B vitamins and minerals such as Zinc your body will not be functioning at an optimal level and this means that the body will be turning to its stores to carry out functions such as pumping blood around the body and keeping the heart beating and your eyes open. In this case weight loss will be the last thing that your body will be able to do. So load up your plate with all the colors of the rainbow – and here’s the best part (and also a bonus tip) when you use vegetables to bulk out your meals you will stay full for longer helping you to consume less over the course of the day. You’re welcome!

Don’t be afraid of the fat – yes there is good fats and bad fats, I’m not talking about the bad guys here (think trans fats and packaged foods and fast food) I’m talking about the good guys – think avocado, oily fish, coconut oil, nut butters – these good guys can actually help enhance the body’s ability to burn fat. For weight loss we need to have balanced hormones and when we switch to low-fat diets this throws our hormones out of whack and this makes weight loss so much harder, and in some cases impossible.
